Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled

As far as I know we have never run out of food to serve our guests in our 70 year history.  Isn't that remarkable!

But sometimes food supplies run low and we need to let our friends know.

That time is now.  If you are in a position to help, please do so.  We can buy a large amount of food for every dollar we receive.  Or if you have extra food you can drop off, we will appreciate it and put it to good use.

When I see people coming here for the first time I realize the value the service the Mission provides.  Some people go days without eating.  They are weak and totally worn out, unable to cope.

All of us here appreciate your support.  The people who come here for a meal and a bed and someone to care, say how grateful they are.  I tell them that many people in our community care about them.  that is encouraging for them to hear.

Most of the problems people face are huge and beyond them.  We help as we can and urge them to turn thier needs over to Jesus, and trust in Him.

Many thanks to you.  May God bless you for your kindness and the joy you give to others.

Sincerely,
Dean R. Gartland

P.S. The summer is the toughest time of the year for keeping our food kitchens supplied.  When the schools close for the summer, mothers bring their children here for a meal.  Otherwise, without a school lunch the children may get very little.

Come and be Safe and Warm

In the last ten years the cost of heating a home with fuel oil has more than doubled. Heating a home with electricity has risen in cost by one third.

Wages have not kept pace.

On top of this, the recent surge in unemployment has forced more people out of their homes to live in cars, with friends and anywhere they can.

We don't want anyone to have to sleep outside on one of our bitter, cold nights. Everyone is welcome here. We'll make up beds on the chapel floor if we have to.

With help from good friends like you, Washington City Mission has become the largest shelter in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Our doors are open every day of the year to care for people in need. The food is good. The beds are warm. The staff is friendly and helpful.

We offer the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all who hunger and thirst for the blessing and love of God.

To send a gift to pay for the heat expenses please click the donate now button to make a donation at our secure service. Any remaining funds will provide food, and to help cover the costs of providing shelter.

16th Annual Sweet Sunday, February 21, 2009

The Hilton Garden Inn at Southpointe will be the site for our Sweet Sunday Dessert Festival again this year between the hours of 1 pm and 6 pm. We will open the doors for lunch at our expanded snack bar at noon and the scrumptious sweets in the ballroom will be ready for consumption at 1:00 pm.

New this year is a celebrity judge who will select his/her favorite dessert. Think you have what it takes? Contact Donna Bussey to sign up as a dessert vendor. (dbussey@citymission.org)

In addition to the fabulous desserts, live entertainment will be introduced by our wonderful Master of Ceremonies, Ron King. Kids Korner this year will again feature face painting, two caricature artists and wonderful crafts for children.

The auction area will feature over 40 baskets chocked full of many wonderful items – something for everyone!

If you would like to volunteer for this wonderful event please contact Cortney Brock, our volunteer coordinator (cbrock@citymission.org). Cortney has partnered the Washington City Mission with Disney’s Give a Day, Get a Disney Day Program. All Sweet Sunday volunteers are eligible for a voucher for a one day pass to Disney properties.

Come one, come all, but you must come to Sweet Sunday 2010 – mark your calendars and make a date to support your local homeless shelter!

Our New Blog

If you’re new to our website you may not have noticed the upgrade. During the last few days of October, the Washington City Mission launched our new and improved website and blog. We are very excited for the response, we have more hits than ever, and we are making new friends left and right!

We originally designed this blog to be an enlightening, up-to-date source of information about the daily and ongoing operations at the Washington City Mission. We also hoped that it could become a forum for our donors, volunteers, supporters, and graduates to have conversations about homelessness, its effects on our community, and what we can do to change it.

To get the conversation started, I have a few questions that I’d like to ask. What do you think of the new site? What improvements would you still like to see? We want to make our site as friendly as possible, so let us know what you think.

Keep checking back, you’ll be hearing from employees from all over the mission!
